AUTHOR'S PURPOSE: Why did the author include this chapter? (Entertain, persuade, inform?)
The author's purpose for the chapter "Horrible Accident" In Vermont is that the author wants to tell the reader what happened to Phineas. The author was also telling the reader how Mr. Gage was cared and the doctors' theories on what happened to Mr. Gage. The chapter Phineas was working with his assistant. They had to follow a strict routine. The two workman had to put a tamping iron in the hole they where working with. One of the two people had not pored the sand like the routine said. People didn't know if the two workman where distracted. After a few minutes the tamping iron flew out of the hole and the tamping iron went inside Phineas Gage's left check bone and forehead. I think the author put this part in here because that was the most detailed part of what happen to Phineas Gage's life. After the tamping iron went in his head he had to be treated with special care. He had a lot of doctors came in his "sickbed" and care for him. Most of the doctors he have seen made theories about him. One theory was that a named Hooke found out the cells in his body was a fundamental unit of life. I think that the author has put this part in this chapter was that the reader know what happened after Gage's accident and what the doctors thought about him
